No, I'm not moving again; rather I'm walking/jogging on the treadmill.
What may be normal for most hasn't been for me. I just prefer sedentary. Crafting, working, reading, writing, watching TV -- not a lot of movement. But I also got a good long look at a bunch of stroke victims at the nursing home where my mom was and I'm not ready to be that sedentary.
So a couple of months ago, I bought sneakers and got on Mike's treadmill. I'm slow, as in my first walk was 1 mile and it took 35 minutes. I'm down to a 17 minute mile, most of which is walking with a few moments of jogging thrown in. My distance is now 1.1 miles 4 times a week. Progress.
Now the amazing part is that I don't hate it. I don't leap out of bed and run down to the man cave to get on the treadmill but it turns out that I really like the feeling of working up a sweat.
I've decided to track my progress on the blog -- you'll find the widget in the upper right. Now I have to keep moving!
Way to go! I too, prefer sedentary. Although, as I get older and things start to hurt, I am finding the treadmill more alluring. I hope to be motivated and am grateful you have shared this. Keep on trucking!
ReplyDeleteThanks. good luck to you. I've been on the treadmill for 8 weeks now and it is still a mighty effort!
DeleteI too have been trying to 'start moving'. I use a stationary bike, as I have bad knees. It's an effort to get on the bike and start moving, but I like the feeling I have when I'm done. Like many other things, it's a habit-I lost a couple of days, and that makes it harder for me to get going again! Hopefully this weekend will be a new start!
ReplyDeleteGo, Joan! I work out in my basement for an hour 3 mornings a week, sometimes I walk with a friend (which is more like therapy for both of us, we vent the whole way). I really like the way I feel when I finish a workout...it's a good way for me to start my day.
ReplyDeletethanks for the encouragement and the inspiration. I also love the feeling when I am done. I can feel my metabolism cranking for at least a couple of hours. Walking with a friend and venting sounds great too!
ReplyDeleteKeep it up! I too was a couch potato until February of this year. I started eating healthier and walking & feel so much better. Did my first 5k Thanksgiving day (fast walking with a little running). Came in 3rd in my age group! Look forward to reading about your progress!
ReplyDeleteGood for you! Thanks for sharing with us! I take my puppy (8 month old golden with energy coming out his ears) for a several mile walk each day, I so enjoy watching him learn about the world and find that this is our 'special' time together. The fact that he is happier and I feel so much better is just icing on the cake! We will be here cheering you on!

Good for you!! While I have been active off and on most of my life, I had let LIFE get in the way and was only walking the dog. Enter in some sadistic cousins (joking) and I'm now trying to complete 2000 miles by the end of the year (in all honesty, I'm afraid I'm going to come within view of the finish line, but not quite make it!! sniff sniff!! This time of year is really hard to get in the mega miles I need to finish, but I will trudge on until the deadline!!)
ReplyDelete(HATE When I hit hit the wrong button!!) I was going to add the suggestion of finding a friend or family member (our "cousin challenge was done over the Internet....we all live in different states) and come up with a fitness challenge. Having to update weekly is a great motivator to get out of bed, especially as the temperatures begin to drop!! Even if it is just the challenge of exercising 30 min x so many days a week.....it's all good!!
